Question

Can Everbridge Suite Rules or notifications be configured to send to a main group while automatically excluding a specific subgroup?

Answer

The Rules builder in Everbridge Suite does not support a direct “not this group” condition. When you create a Rule, you select which groups or subgroups to include via checkboxes, but you cannot add a negation condition such as “not a member of Group A.” The workflow selects which groups to include and does not provide a separate “exclude group” toggle.

To target specific audiences, you can create Rules and combine group selection with additional filtering criteria. You can build a Rule that includes one or more groups or subgroups and then refine the contact list by using filters such as “Contains” to select specific record types or “Does not Contain” to exclude certain record types. This allows you to create a comprehensive Rule that selects the desired groups and applies additional filtering, but it does not implement a negative group condition at the group-selection level.

The following practical options are available when you need to send to a main group while excluding a subgroup:

  • Maintain an explicit complement group: Create and maintain a group that contains the contacts you want to include while omitting the subgroup you want to exclude. This group is then selected directly when sending communications.

  • Use a user attribute as an exclusion filter: Mark members of the subgroup you want to exclude with a specific attribute and then configure a Rule with conditions such as “Belongs to Group All” and an additional filter (for example, an attribute set to a specific value). This uses group membership plus contact attributes to refine the audience.

  • Manually exclude at send time: When sending a communication, select the primary group or groups and then do not select, or actively remove, the subgroup you want to exclude. You can also combine this with per-contact exclusions and filtering options on the Recipients page of the notification or incident communication.

Each approach has trade-offs. Maintaining an explicit complement group requires group membership maintenance. Using a user attribute requires maintaining attribute values in sync with subgroup membership. Manual exclusion depends on accurate recipient selection and review at send time. In all cases, it is recommended to preview or verify the recipient list before sending to confirm that the correct contacts are included or excluded.
