EBS - Nested Groups Limited to One Parent; Use Contact Rules to Target Contacts Across Multiple Groups

Topic

This article describes how nested groups behave in Everbridge Suite and how to use a Rule to target contacts across multiple groups when a nested group needs to function as if it belongs to more than one parent group.

Description

In Everbridge Suite, groups are collections of contacts used to organize recipients for notifications. They are static lists of contacts that are maintained by users and can represent sets of contacts that share commonalities. Groups can also be nested to create parent/child structures.

Groups may be moved into other groups as subgroups in the Everbridge Manager Portal. To move a group into another group as a subgroup, an Organization Administrator can navigate to the Contacts tab, select the Groups sub-tab, click and hold the group to be moved, drag it to the desired parent group, wait for a green arrow to appear indicating correct placement, and then release the mouse button to drop the group into the parent group, creating a nested group structure.

Currently, nested groups can only be listed under one parent group. A single nested group cannot be listed under multiple parent groups at the same time. If a nested group needs to be associated with multiple parent groups, this cannot be done directly in the group hierarchy.

If there is a need to associate a nested group with multiple parent groups, a contact Rule can be used to achieve similar functionality. A Rule is a dynamic method to select contacts based on data fields for a notification. In this context, a Rule can be configured to select contacts based on their associated groups and subgroups.

To create a Rule that targets chosen groups or subgroups, go to the Contacts tab and select the Rules area. Click Add New Rule, enter a name for the Rule, and in the Filter section select Associated Groups. A drop-down or list of groups and subgroups will appear. Check the boxes for the groups or subgroups that should be included, then click Save. This workflow selects which groups to include; it does not provide a separate exclude group toggle.
