EBS: Email Ingestion 'Sent From' — Configure Domain Wildcards and Multiple Domains

Topic

This article describes how the Sent from condition works for Email Ingestion in Everbridge Suite and how to configure it when emails are sent from a single domain or from multiple domains.

Description

The Sent from field in an Email Ingestion integration is used to match the sender address of incoming emails. The field must match the actual sender address used by the email source. Because forwarding can change the Sent from address, the value configured in Everbridge must match the sender of the forwarded email.

To review or modify this setting, open the Email Ingestion integration in Settings and click the pencil icon next to the integration. In the integration configuration, locate the Sent from field. Everbridge requires specifying a domain or wildcard domain format for this field.

To allow addresses from a single domain, configure the Sent from value in a wildcard domain format such as *@yourdomain.com. This type of configuration permits emails from any address within that specific domain. When configured in this way, Everbridge can ingest emails from any sender at that domain and automatically launch incidents based on the configured incident templates.

If the sending system, such as a CAD system, uses a specific domain, specify that domain or a wildcard for that domain in the Sent from field (for example, *@yourdomain.com). In the And received at field, enter the custom recipient address created for the integration, which is the address Everbridge will receive those emails at. Any email-matching conditions configured in the integration are case sensitive and should be set accordingly.

A single Email Ingestion integration cannot be configured to accept addresses from multiple different domains in the Sent from field. To allow senders from multiple domains, create separate ingestion integrations. Configure each integration with the appropriate Sent from address or wildcard for the domain that should be allowed. These integrations can be configured identically apart from the domain-specific Sent from value.

Wildcard formats such as *@domain.com can be used to allow multiple addresses from one domain. In this format, the wildcard applies to the portion of the email address before the @ symbol. When this configuration is used, it is not necessary to list each individual address for that domain.

Comma-separated lists are not supported in the Sent From field. The product does not accept multiple addresses separated by commas in a single Email Ingestion configuration. Instead, use a wildcard domain configuration such as *@yourdomain.com to allow multiple addresses within a single domain, and create separate integrations for additional domains, each with its own Sent from value.

If emails must be accepted from different domains, organizations may create multiple ingestion points or configure a central email address that forwards emails from various sources. When using a forwarding address, verify that the Sent from field in Everbridge matches the domain or wildcard domain of the actual sender in the forwarded email.

Configuring the sending domain (for example, *@yourdomain.com) as the sender address for Email Ingestion in Everbridge allows the platform to ingest emails from any address within that domain and launch incidents using configured incident templates. Proper configuration typically requires coordination to ensure that the integration, including the sending domain and recipient address, is set up correctly.
