Contact upload failure error messages may be viewed under Contacts > Uploads> User-added image. Selecting the User-added imageupload results icon next to the desired file opens the Upload Results page, where the error is displayed.

Root Cause

This error occurs when a CSV upload file attempts to add an address to a contact record that already contains the maximum number of allowed addresses (5). Adding a new address (or location) in the CSV upload file does not automatically overwrite an existing address unless the Location names match.

The {Location that cannot be added} portion of the error message indicates the location name for the address that cannot be added.

Uploads can also fail with this error when the same contact appears in multiple rows with the same External ID and Location Name but with different address details. The system expects multiple distinct locations for the same contact to be provided on a single row using the Location 1, Location 2, Location 3 (and so on) field groups. If separate rows reuse the same External ID and Location Name but supply conflicting address information, the system interprets this as a single location with inconsistent data and rejects the additional address once the maximum of five addresses is reached.

Solution

The upload file must be formatted correctly to delete or replace an existing address. The following knowledge article describes how to remove location information: EBS: Deleting or Replacing the Static Location Data for a Contact When Uploading a CSV File to the Everbridge Manager Portal.

When you need to upload multiple locations for the same contact, combine them into a single row for that contact, using the Location 1, Location 2, Location 3 (and additional) column sets rather than creating multiple rows with the same External ID.
