Title

UPLOADCONTACT_ADDRESS_LOCATION_TYPE_DUPLICATE During Contact Upload

Problem

A contact upload fails with the following error:

UPLOADCONTACT_ADDRESS_LOCATION_TYPE_DUPLICATE

Affected contacts and their address locations are not imported correctly.

Root Cause

The upload contains duplicate or conflicting location data for the same contact. Possible causes include:

  • A contact already has the maximum of five address locations, and the upload attempts to add another address.

  • The same External ID appears on multiple rows with the same Location Name but different address details.

  • The same Location Type, such as "Work - Primary," appears more than once for a contact.

  • An existing static location conflicts with a location included in the upload.

  • A source system or integration adds a static Work location while the upload also includes a "Work - Primary" location.

The platform treats a contact's locations as a single set and requires consistent, non-duplicated Location Name and Location Type values.

Solution

Review the affected contact records and correct duplicate or conflicting location data.

Identify affected contacts

  1. Open the CSV file or feed used for the contact upload.

  2. Locate records associated with the UPLOADCONTACT_ADDRESS_LOCATION_TYPE_DUPLICATE error.

  3. Match affected records by External ID when available.

Check the number of address locations

Contacts can have up to five address locations.

  1. Count all address locations provided for each affected contact across the location column groups.

  2. Remove or consolidate addresses when a contact has more than five address locations.

Consolidate locations for each contact

  1. Locate records where the same External ID appears on multiple rows.

  2. Consolidate the contact's location information into a single row using the available Location 1, Location 2, Location 3, and additional location column groups.

  3. Remove duplicate rows after consolidating the location information.

Ensure Location Names match existing data

When an upload updates an existing contact location, the Location Name must match the existing Location Name.

  1. Review each Location Name for the affected contact.

  2. Compare each value with the existing contact location.

  3. Correct differences in spelling or punctuation so the Location Name matches the existing value.

Eliminate duplicate Location Types

  1. Review all Location Type values for each affected contact.

  2. Confirm that each Location Type appears only once for the contact.

  3. Remove duplicate locations or duplicate Location Type values.

Handle static Work locations

A source system or integration may add a static Work location that conflicts with a "Work - Primary" location in the upload.

  1. Determine whether a source system or integration adds a static Work location.

  2. If the upload also contains "Work - Primary" for the same contact, modify the source data or source behavior to prevent the duplicate location.

  3. If an expected automatic removal of the static Work location does not occur, adjust the source data to prevent the duplicate as a temporary workaround.

Run the contact upload again

  1. Save the corrected CSV file or feed.

  2. Run the contact upload again.

  3. Confirm that the UPLOADCONTACT_ADDRESS_LOCATION_TYPE_DUPLICATE error no longer occurs for the corrected contacts.
