EBS: Troubleshooting Blank Screens When Clicking User Registration Invitation Links

Problem

You encounter a blank screen when clicking your Everbridge user registration invitation link, which prevents you from accessing your registration page.

Root Cause

Several factors can cause registration links to fail loading properly:

  • Email client content blocking: Your email application may be blocking links or external content for privacy or security reasons, which is one of the most common causes of blank screens.
  • Incompatible or missing browser settings: Your email application may attempt to open links with an incompatible application or one that is not installed on your device.
  • Link expiration: Registration invitation links expire after 72 hours from when they are sent. If you delay accessing the link beyond this window, it will no longer function.
  • Browser or device-specific issues: Browser cache, cookies, extensions, VPN services, or device-specific problems can interfere with link functionality.
  • Authentication parameter corruption: If the link is manually copied with line breaks or is split across multiple lines, the important authentication parameters (auth and code values) can become corrupted, preventing the link from functioning properly.

Solution

Follow these troubleshooting steps in order until your registration link works:

Step 1: Check Email Client Content Blocking Settings

  1. Look for a notification at the top of your email message that says something like "Pictures and links in this message have been blocked for privacy."
  2. If you see this message, click the Show Content link to enable the links in your email.
  3. Try clicking the registration link again.

Step 2: Verify Your Default Browser Settings

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps > Choose default apps by protocol.
  2. Select your preferred web browser for the protocols you want to use.
  3. Attempt to click the registration link again from your email.

Step 3: Manually Copy and Paste the Registration Link

  1. Right-click on the registration link in your email.
  2. Select Copy Link Address.
  3. Open a new tab in your web browser.
  4. Paste the link into the address bar and press Enter.
  5. Important: Be sure to copy the entire URL without any line breaks. Registration links contain important authentication parameters (auth and code values) that can be corrupted if the link is split or wrapped across multiple lines in your email. These parameters must remain intact for the link to function properly.

Step 4: Clear Browser Cache and Try a Different Browser

  1. Clear your browser cache and cookies.
  2. Attempt to access the registration link again.
  3. If the issue persists, try opening the link in a different browser such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge.

Step 5: Disable Browser Extensions and VPN Services

  1. Temporarily disable any browser extensions you have installed.
  2. If you're using a VPN service, temporarily disable it.
  3. Try accessing the registration link again.

Step 6: Check Link Expiration

Registration invitation links expire after 72 hours from when they are sent. If you have delayed accessing the link beyond this window, the link will no longer work. If your link has expired, contact your administrator to request a fresh invitation.

Step 7: Try a Different Device

Attempt to access the link from a different device (such as a smartphone, tablet, or different computer) to determine whether the issue is device-specific.

Workaround

If the blank screen continues to appear after trying all the troubleshooting steps above, contact your administrator for assistance. Your administrator can:

  • Send you a new invitation link
  • Verify that your account was properly created in the system
  • Investigate any system-level issues that may be affecting registration links

When contacting your administrator, provide any error details you encountered during the troubleshooting process to help them investigate the issue more effectively.
