VCC: How Earthquakes (USGS) Maps Magnitude to Severity

Topic

How USGS maps earthquake magnitude to Everbridge severity levels.

Description

Magnitude to Severity Mapping

Magnitude  Severity Description
0.0-3.9 Minor Minimal to no known threat to life or property - Up to: Often felt by people, but very rarely causes damage. Shaking of indoor objects can be noticeable.
4.0-5.9 Moderate Possible threat to life or property - Up to: Can cause damage of varying severity to poorly constructed buildings. Zero to slight damage to all other buildings. Felt by everyone.
6.0-7.9 Severe Significant threat to life or property - Up to: Causes damage to most buildings, some to partially or completely collapse or receive severe damage. Well-designed structures are likely to receive damage. Felt across great distances with major damage mostly limited to 250 km from epicenter.
8.0 > Extreme Extraordinary threat to life or property - Up to: At or near total destruction

Alerting

Alerts can be configured to alert on a specific magnitude range.

Alerts can be configured to alert on Severity.

Note:  If you create an alert workflow that has both Magnitude and Severity, both conditions will need to be true to create an Alert.  Using both conditions could lead to a missed Alert.  It is recommended to use either Magnitude or Severity, in your alert workflows for Earthquakes (USGS).
