Question
Why does the Custom From Email Address need to be a valid email address?
Note: The Custom From Email Address is an optional premium feature. For more information on this feature and how to request that it be enabled for your site, see knowledge article 000004327 - Custom E-Mail Notification Sender Information.
Answer
The value specified for the Custom From E-Mail Address also acts as the address where bounce-back and out-of-office e-mails are received from notifications. The address needs to be a valid email address so that the bounce back emails have somewhere to go.
By Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) rules, these bounce-back messages (for example, mailbox full) and auto-replies (for example, out-of-office) are sent to the Envelope From address. In Everbridge Suite, the Envelope From is, by default, set to match the Header From (the Custom From address). When your configuration is correct, all such responses will therefore be delivered to the Custom From address.
If you do not want bounce-backs and auto-replies delivered to the Custom From address, Everbridge provides an option to change this behavior so that those messages are routed elsewhere.
