EB360: Unblocking SMS Short Codes in Everbridge Suite

Topic

How to unblock SMS Short Codes in Everbridge Suite.

Description

Everbridge sends SMS notifications from a local number depending on the destination country, and sometimes the local number is a "short code". A short code is a special phone number that makes it easier to send and receive messages, but short codes can be blocked on the recipient's end by their mobile phone service provider. These short codes are specific to each country and cannot be customized for individual organizations. For a list of SMS numbers used by Everbridge, see knowledge article Global SMS Codes. (To access the Everbridge Global SMS Codes article, go to the Manager Portal at manager.everbridge.net or manager.everbridge.eu, then select the ? icon and choose "Everbridge Support Center".)

Everbridge maintains at least two SMS codes per country through multiple network providers to ensure message delivery reliability. This approach allows them to switch between different short codes as needed to maintain service quality. Customers with custom short codes should be aware that Everbridge may change the active short code to maintain optimal service delivery.

Carriers may block short codes which prevent the notification from being delivered. Recipients can contact their mobile service carrier and have them unblock the short code. If recipients do not wish to unblock short codes, they have two options:

  • Use the delivery method Plain text Email - 2 Way which uses the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). For more information about SMTP, contact a mobile carrier or visit: http://www.emailtextmessages.com/
  • Contact their organization's system administrators to request removal from specific notifications while maintaining other critical communications
