NOTE: Contact Upload file failure error messages may be viewed under Contacts + Assets > Contacts > Uploads > . Clicking on the icon next to the desired upload file brings you to the Upload Results page where the error is displayed.
Root Cause
This error occurs when a US ZIP code is missing one or more digits. This issue often occurs with ZIP codes that start with 0 and have the leading zero trimmed by Microsoft Excel. The end of the error message will let you know which ZIP code in the CSV upload file is missing digits.
When preparing your CSV file for upload using a simple text editor such as Notepad, any leading zeros in the Postal Code or other columns should be preserved without taking any additional precautions.
Some spreadsheet editors such as Excel will format numerical values to drop leading zeros, which will prevent any postal codes with leading zeros from being uploaded to Everbridge (the contacts should still upload, but they will be missing postal codes).
Solution
Please make sure that the ZIP codes in your CSV upload file are complete. If the issue is caused by leading zeros being dropped, then follow these steps to format the postal codes correctly using Excel (other spreadsheet editors should have similar steps):
- Select the Postal Code column by clicking on the column header above the first row "Postal Code" cell.
- Right-click on any cell in the highlighted column, then choose the Format Cells option.
- From the Category menu, choose the Special option.
- From the Type menu, choose the Zip Code option.
- Choose the OK button to complete the formatting.
Please note that this will only set the cell formatting while you have the file open in your spreadsheet editor. Once your contact data is saved as a CSV file, all formatting will be removed. This is OK for uploading, but you will need to reformat the Postal Codes any time the file is opened in your spreadsheet editor.
