How to Import KML and ESRI shape files into Visual Command Center to create a context layer.

Description

VCC can display the data from a KML or ESRI shape file on the map as a Context Layer. VCC does not issue alerts for items in Context Layers, they are used for contextual information only.

  • Keyhole Markup Language (KML) is a standard file format used to display geographic data.
  • A shapefile is a vector data storage format for storing the location, shape, and attributes of geographic features. A shapefile is stored in a set of related files and contains one feature class.
  • ESRI: Environmental Systems Research Institute. A company that specializes in GIS mapping

There are two options to add a Context Layer to VCC.

Please note: The size limitation for KML and shape files is 8 MB.

Drag & Drop

  1. Log in to Visual Command Center.
  2. Drag a file directly onto the map or click on the menu button from the upper right hand corner of the page. You will see + Copy under the icon when you have reached a valid spot to drop the file.
