EBS: 'SSH Session Terminated by Remote Party' Error When Uploading Contacts via SFTP in Everbridge Suite

2026-05-07 21:09:08 UTC

Problem

Uploading Contacts via SFTP generates:

ERROR:> SSH session terminated by remote party

Root Cause

This occurs when someone attempts to create a public key which renders the existing private key inoperable.

Solution

Generate a new private key with the steps below:

  1. Log in to the Manager Portal.
  2. Click Settings > Contacts and Groups > Secure FTP.
  3. Make sure Private Key is selected.
  4. Click Generate a New Key.
  5. Click Download to download the new key.
  6. Use the new key to upload contacts via SFTP.

If the newly generated SFTP key still does not work, verify the following before requesting additional assistance:

  • Confirm that you uploaded the correct public key (not a private key) to Everbridge and that it includes the required BEGIN/END lines.
  • Confirm the public key format is accepted (for example, SSH-RSA or SSH-2).
  • Verify that the SFTP host name displayed on the Secure FTP page in the Manager Portal matches the host you are connecting to in your SFTP client.
  • Verify that your SFTP client is configured to use the matching private key file, the Account ID as the username, and port 22.

If all of these settings are correct and the connection still fails with the same error, contact support to review the key and SFTP configuration.
