VCC: Expected Behavior of a Point-Based Risk Event Location Versus a Risk Event Location Defined Within a Polygon Shape in Visual Command Center (VCC)

Topic:

Expected behavior of a point-based risk event location versus a risk event location defined within a polygon shape in Visual Command Center (VCC).

Description:

Visual Command Center creates an alert when whenever a risk event occurs near the location of one of your assets. An alert indicates that a risk event may threaten your organization and may require you to act.

Alert icons automatically appear on the map and timeline, and alerts are listed in the Alerts feed. Depending on your configuration, Visual Command Center may also automatically launch incidents to send alert information to contacts you have designated.

Asset Represented by a Point:

When the asset is represented by a point, such as a building or the location of a contact, the expected behavior is:

If the Risk Event Location Is a Point If the Risk Event Location Is a Polygon

  • An alert is created if the asset is within the risk event’s impact radius.
  • The distance from the risk event to the asset is calculated and appears in the Operator Console.

  • An alert is created if the asset is within the risk event polygon.
  • Since the asset is within the polygon, there is no meaningful “distance from the event” and so no distance value appears in the Operator Console.
  • There is no meaningful “nearest asset,” and so the names of some representative assets are auto-filled into the incident variables VCC: Nearest Asset and VCC: Nearest Asset List.  The variable VCC: Nearest Asset Distance is set to N/A for “not applicable.”

  • The asset names and their distances from the event in kilometers are auto-filled into the incident variables VCC: Nearest Asset, VCC: Nearest Asset Distance, and VCC: Nearest Asset List (ten closest assets only).

Asset Represented by a Polygon:

When the asset is represented by a polygon, such as a campus, region, or other map areas, the expected behavior is:

If the Risk Event Location Is a Point If the Risk Event Location Is a Polygon

  • An alert is created if any part of the risk event’s impact radius overlaps the asset polygon.
  • There is no meaningful “distance from the event” and so no distance value appears in the Operator Console.
  • There is no meaningful “nearest asset,” and so these incident variables are not auto-filled: VCC: Nearest Asset, VCC: Nearest Asset List. The variable VCC: Nearest Asset Distance is set to 0.0 km.
  • An alert is created if any part of the risk event polygon overlaps the asset polygon.
  • There is no meaningful “distance from the event” and so no distance value appears in the Operator Console.
  • There is no meaningful “nearest asset,” and so these incident variables are not auto-filled: VCC: Nearest Asset and VCC: Nearest Asset List. The variable VCC: Nearest Asset Distance is set to N/A for “not applicable.”
